book review: born wicked by Jessica Spotswood

First off – the cover is gorgeous. So Born Wicked definitely has that going for it.
As for inside the book – I really enjoyed it. The premise is creative, the romance is fun, the conflict is intriguing. It kept me interested and it kept me entertained. But it all went by so quickly. I think I wanted to be worried just a little bit longer, afraid for certain characters just a little bit more, anxious about the risks and fears a little more deeply. The bones are there, and they have meat – but I wanted more on them.
I feel the same way about the characters – give me some more depth. What’s really going on in Paul’s head? Surely there is more than just wanting to make Cate (our protagonist) his wife, isn’t there? But I didn’t find any hints of that. And I’d like to understand a bit more about Finn and his family. Or at least possibilities about Finn and his family. I asked myself questions about them but didn’t really find signs or signals as to what else might be going on. Same with some other key characters in the book.
This is book #1 in a series and it certainly ends with a cliffhanger. Will I read the next one? Most likely, yes. I am curious. Will I run out and buy it the first day? Probably not. But I expect it will be a fun, light read perfect for a time when I’m ready for a fun, light read.
