"Happy Holidays" I Say To You. And You. And You.

There is some hubbub in the world today about saying “happy holidays” instead of “merry Christmas” to folks at this time of year and I think it is all silliness. I say spread tidings of good cheer, share wishes of joy and happiness and just feel good about it.

The fact is, I’ve been saying “happy holidays” to people for years – long before it was politically correct and now, some say, too politically correct — because I really wanted them to have happy holidays. Plural. All of them. Every holiday. Whether it is right around Thanksgiving or Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or New Year’s Eve (and whatever other holiday I may have missed here; Boxing Day perhaps?), I say “happy holidays” because I want to cover the whole gamut. And, honestly, I want it to be inclusive and meaningful to all my friends and acquaintances, regardless of their religious affiliation, belief or holiday practice.

And besides that, as we all know, life dishes out plenty of things that cause angst. How one chooses to send holiday cheer is hardly worthy of angst in my humble opinion. Share good cheer. Accept good cheer. And be happy and cheerful.

So I say happy holidays to you! I hope they are wonderful, merry, joyous, peaceful and full of love and good cheer. I hope the new year is the best one yet but not the best one ever. And I hope you enjoy every minute. And all the best to you and yours this festive holiday season!
