Holiday Party Hearty

My husband and I attended three parties in eight days and, yes, we had a very nice time at each of them.

The first party of the three was a wedding reception for a woman at my husband’s workplace – his new workplace. At that party, at the beginning of the evening I knew no one except my husband. The second party, one week later, was his company’s official holiday party. At this event I knew quite a few of the people that I’d met at the first party.

The next night was a holiday party hosted by longtime friends of ours. We know a few people at this party because we see them every year – at this party. But we never see them any other time during the year.

All of these events got me to thinking about parties and that, at their base level, they seem to be a rather odd ritual.

Basically you, the host, invite a lot of people that you like to your home and you provide food, drink, music and such. And then you only spend a couple of minutes with each of the people that you really like because there are so many people to visit with that you can’t really spend too much time talking to any one person because you want to talk to every person.

Meanwhile, all of the invitees have to strike up conversations with people they don’t know, or that they don’t know very well.

Isn’t this odd? Or am I just too much of an introvert to “get it?” Which is not to say that I did not have fun and that I’ll no longer attend such events. I certainly will. But it’s not odd?

Regardless, party on, my friends. Party on.
